This songwriting workshop will walk participants through the process of creating a song. Participants can bring images, stories, melody or actual lyrics if they already have them, and we will discuss ways to develop these initial ideas into a new musical composition.
Kathy Valentine has been a working musician and songwriter ever since she started her first band, at age 16, in her hometown of Austin. She cites pop radio, blues, rock, and roots music as her influences when writing songs, and says that expressing herself through her music and songs has been the best therapy she could ever have.
Kathy moved to Los Angeles when she was 19 and within a few years had joined a band that would go on to make music history: The Go-Go’s. In this group, Kathy wrote or co-wrote some of the band’s most renowned tunes, including the hits “Vacation” and “Head Over Heels.” She has written hundreds of other songs that have been recorded by other artists both known and upcoming. Valentine also enjoys producing and mentoring young women who dream of having a career in music.
Kathy returned to live in Austin in 2006, where she is working on a college degree in Fine Arts and English Writing, recording, writing and performing with her band The BlueBonnets, as well as her second solo record, due in 2015. Valentine says her biggest challenges lie ahead as she works to finish her memoirs, a collection of short stories that accompany songs, a screenplay, a non-fiction book, and be the best mom  she can be to her 12 year old daughter.
